- Brown the cubed round steak, onion, and mushrooms in a large saucepan with oil until golden and caramelized to develop fond.
- Add carrots, celery, garlic, and pearl barley; stir to coat in the oils.
- Pour in condensed beef broth and water; bring to a gentle boil.
