- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, grated onions, salt, dried marjoram, and pepper. Mix thoroughly but gently to avoid tough patties.
- Divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape into oval patties about ¾-inch thick.
- Preheat the broiler and position the oven rack so patties will be about 3 inches from the heat source.
- Place patties on a broiler pan or foil-lined baking sheet and broil for 3-4 minutes on the first side.
- Flip patties and broil for another 4 minutes or until cooked to your liking.
- While the patties are broiling, prepare the mushroom gravy mix according to package directions in a saucepan.
- Stir in the drained canned mushrooms and red wine (if using) into the prepared gravy.
- Pour the hot mushroom gravy over the broiled Salisbury steak patties and serve immediately.
Notes
For best results, use an 80/20 ground beef blend for optimal juiciness and don't skip the marjoram for its unique herbal depth.
